The Person

Joanne B. Ciulla (b. 1952), a philosopher by training, was a founding faculty member of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond — the first school of its kind — and later directed the Institute for Ethical Leadership at Rutgers. Her central claim: ethics is not a topic within leadership studies; it is the heart of the subject.

Room II
The Idea in Context

Ciulla argued that ethics is constitutive of leadership itself — the leader–follower relationship is inherently moral. Good leadership means both effective and ethical.

The era: Dynamic Interaction — A dynamic, interactive influence process among individuals in groups; emphasis on managing environmental cross points.

The Big Idea
The Enduring Contribution
Made 'good leader' a moral claim, not just a performance rating.
