OpenSky × Intelligence · Field Notes
A note written close to the moment is data about how leadership actually happens.
Field Notes began as writing from the road — raw captures after a site visit, a facilitation, a flight. It is still that. But it is now also the first fully instrumented intake channel of the intelligence platform: one capture, many artifacts.
What changed
From page to pipeline.
A field note used to have one life: it was written, published, and read. Instrumented, the same note has four — and each life strengthens the others.
Published essays
The public notes on Field Notes — what most of the world sees. Written close to the moment, before the meaning gets over-polished.
Book chapters
Fragments accumulate into manuscripts. The Space Between and Between the Beats are being assembled from this evidence, note by note.
Learning intelligence
Tensions, paradoxes, venue criteria, facilitation lessons — extracted, mapped to the ontology, and available to every future program design and client engagement.
A stronger ontology
Every note tests the model. New patterns propose new entities and relationships; the shared language of the platform grows from lived work, not theory alone.
A worked example
One afternoon in Fredericksburg.
A site visit to a Hill Country venue produced a single field note. Here is what the instrument extracted from it.
entities: Venue (The Edge) · Tension (engineered vs. natural intimacy) · Learning (journey as pedagogy)
criteria proposed: horizon · intimate scale · genuine natural beauty · layered meaning · morning ritual
paradox pairs: sky/ground · destination/journey · who-you-are/who-you-are-becoming
feeds: venue search criteria · The Space Between (ch. draft) · convening design playbook
review_status: Validated — published as public field note
The note taught a lesson once. The instrument makes it teach forever.
Why this matters beyond one writer
Field Notes is the prototype for your organization’s own capture discipline.
The same pattern — capture close to the moment, structure lightly, map to a shared language, review before it becomes truth — is exactly what the platform brings to your leaders’ reflections, debriefs, and program artifacts. We run it on our own work first.
We eat our own cooking
Every mechanism we propose for client evidence — packets, provenance, review gates — runs first on our own field notes.
Reflection with compounding returns
Leaders already reflect. The instrument makes each reflection reusable: for coaching, for cohort synthesis, for the next program design.
Public by choice, private by default
What gets published is a deliberate output decision. Capture and analysis stay private and governed; publication is one artifact among several.
